Album number ten from California’s Neurosis is yet another essential purchase for fans of Sludge / Post metal. Again recorded by Steven Frank Albini the Oakland sextet consistently delivers some of the highest quality metal with enviable ease and effortless cool. Lead track ‘We All Rage in Gold’ is a brooding giant that showcases the unique brilliance of Scott Kelly’s voice. A peppering of haunting keyboards allow space for the track to grow and breathe organically and the eerie outro leaves its mark on the listener long after. Other stand-out tracks include ‘At the Well’ which features the stirring sound of wailing bagpipes halfway through, changing the direction expertly. The melancholic procession of ‘Casting of The Ages’ ticks all the boxes and sets the scene expertly, before the inevitable storm appears in a cloud of distorted guitars. The drums on Honor Found in Decay are classically recorded, sounding punchy and raw in the way that only Neurosis can. The slow ungainly procession of ‘Bleeding the Pigs’ menaces calmly before exploding in a haze of straining guitars and wrath-laden vocals. Elsewhere, the slicing megalodon that is ‘Casting of the Ages’ broods just below boiling point. Honor Found in Decay sits proudly alongside some of the bands best work. One struggles to envisage how they are going to top this.
