Formed in 2011, Post Black Metal / Shoegaze duo Apnea are still relatively new to the scene. Created by Drew Reid in Auckland, New Zealand. It appears that shuffling line-ups have hindered the writing process and here Silent Cities has but five tracks in total on this extended play. “Mediums” opens like a caged animal springing from it’s prison at the precise moment of release. With frantic and relentless beats this builds momentum very quickly to become a rather blisteringly fast number. In fact the machine drumming on Silent Cities is one of the highlights on this release, that and the force of the deep ridged garotted attack from the guitars. “She Is” is an extension of its predecessor and is equally astounding to listen to. The vocals feel a little lost in the mix however, on repeated listens this may have been the effect that the producer was looking for, highly effective all the same. Mikkelsen and Reid are both highly talented guitarists and they switch the mood of their songs with relative ease, which is not exactly an easy thing to do. “Sleeping Horses” is yet another highlight here, and one of my personal favourites. The chainsaw roar of the guitars against the slick and matt thick drumming is truly spellbinding. Finally, with the serenely peaceful strumming of “Sve” Apnea bring proceedings to an all too early close. This release deserves to be recognised by a much wider audience. Once again, Immortal Frost Productions have managed to uncover another musical gem in Apnea, more please!
Drew Reid (Vocals, Guitars, Bass, Drums), Ben Mikkelsen (Guitars).
