Saman Nu’s Tehran-based Silent Path are flying the flag for Iranian metal and are currently promoting their tantalising amalgamation of black and funeral doom. Originally completed in 2009 and at last seeing the light of day through Canadian label Hypnotic Dirge Records, Mourner Portraits allows Nu (EkoveEfrits) to flex his creative muscle.
On the majestic sorrow of ‘Epic Suicide’ the singer is powerful, yet vulnerable. Although it is top heavy in downtempo ambient, melody features highly on Mourner Portraits too, none more so than on the superb ‘Filth of Mankind’ which has an addictive riff throughout. ‘Unwritten Story’ is a soft edged instrumental piano led lament. The unique eeriness that Nu exudes through his guitar sound is infectious and it gels extremely well in contrast to the vocals. The haunting overdub of a british broadcaster announcing the death of Hitler at the tail end of ‘Epic Suicide’ sends a chill down the spine and leaves just the right amount of dead air before progressing into ‘Grey Dolls From Nowhere’. Fans of Ekove Efrits will be pleased, whilst prospective fans will also have plenty to absorb from Mourner Portraits. The wait has most certainly been worth it.
Mourner Portraits is available now via Hypnotic Dirge Records.
