Downfall of Gaia are a four piece Doom act who hail from 3 German cities (Berlin, Hamburg & Hannover) collectively. Having formed back in 2006 (originally called Toxic Nation) the group have built a loyal following across Europe and beyond. They recently signed with Metal Blade Records back in June this year, so expect to hear a lot more from this quartet. Opening with the piano-led instrumental and aptly titled ‘Prolog’, the group slithers patiently before churning out rapid and impressive pace changes on the sublime ‘Odium’. Longest track ‘Zerfall’ showcases a ferocious chokehold-like vocal performance from vocalist Dominik Goncalves dos Reis. All the while, backed by a smattering of thrashing guitars much like their fellow countrymen Long Distance Calling on ‘Avoid The Light’. There are elements of Tool’s ‘Lateralus’ album on the clean guitar intro to ‘Silere’. This works perfectly and would not be too out of place on a Danny Boyle film. This is stirring stuff. Anton Lisovoj provides a wonderfully sombre bassline on ‘Epilog’. I struggled to find anything negative to say about Epos, as it is a record that I can revisit time and time again. It is a record that you can comfortably sit through without feeling the urge to skip tracks, if anything this record is not long enough! There is an abundance of melodies on Epos and the future looks very bright indeed for Downfall of Gaia. I for one cannot wait to hear what they come up with on their next offering ‘Suffocating in the Swarm of Cranes’, which is due for release soon via Metal Blade.
